The most important reviews are those made over the table at home or out to dinner by the everyday drinker and wine lover. Having said that media and third party reviews are a nice pat on the back and do provide some external validation, and every year the release of Halliday's Wine Companion always draws a lot of attention and excitement.

Oakdene Wines has received a 5 red star rating for the second year running in the latest edition of the Halliday Wine Companion, James Hallidays’ definitive guide to Australian Wine. A 5 red star rating lists Oakdene in the top echelon (4.9%) of Australian producers, as an “outstanding winery regularly producing wines of exemplary quality and typicity. Also will have at least two wines rated at 95 points or above, and had a 5 star rating for the previous two years." This year we had 5 wines rated 95 points or above including the current release 2013 Single Vineyard William Shiraz at 97points and was included in the Best of the Best by variety!  Overall, Oakdene has 9 wines rated 91 points or higher out of the 14 that we produce.

Wild yeast, small addition of whole bunches, matured for 16 months in new and used French barriques. Deep, but vivid purple-crimson, this is as powerful as cool-grown shiraz can possibly be, full-bodied and taking no prisoners, albeit nodding to the Rhone’s Hill of Hermitage, its genetic ancestor. Inky black fruits, excellent acidity and tannins all under the same star sign; it will outlive many of us.

Oakdene Peta’s Single Vineyard Bellarine Peninsula Pinot Noir 2013 - 95 points / 5 goblets

Wild yeast, small addition of whole bunches; 11 months in new and used French barriques. An opulent pinot noir, very much in the style of Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula; fleshy dark cherries allied with lesser amounts of plum, will sustain the wine for years; the tannins are supportive and will help the wine into the prime of its life as the spice box opens.

A crimson-purple 58/30/12% blend of merlot, cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon, wild yeast and matured in new and seasoned French barriques for 16 months. Yet another Oakdene ’13 to over-deliver, flush with cassis, redcurrant and plum fruit given complexity by cedary oak and ripe tannins.

100% barrel fermented, plus 8 months maturation in French barriques (15% new). Pale salmon, and remarkably pure, crisp and vibrant given its vinification. The cost and effort has been handsomely repaid. This is a real wine.

100% barrel-fermented in French barriques (15% new) and matured in barrel for 8 months. The approach has worked very well, the gooseberry, guava and citrus fruit neatly framed by the oak; the overall balance and length are admirable.
